Process
With each piece in wood, several starting points can be considered.
I usually allow the wood to tell me what manner it would best be cut.
- Does the grain have a natural artwork of its own?
- Does the piece of wood have a functional purpose that it can serve?
- Is the tone of the wood better for coarse of highly polished appearances?
There are many more to think of through the creative process, but usually these small questions are enough to paint the way for the outcome. Many of the pieces take on a mind of their own when these questions have been answered.
The piece bellow was a slab of Black Walnut that had been taken down after a storm. All of the damage caused from weathering gave it three distinctly different sections. While looking further, I noticed that the wood tone was able to be polished in three separate and equally beautiful methods.
By taking this as my starting point, I looked up ancient numeric symbols for the number 3 and used them as the cuts between the pieces. This, and many hours of separate and intense curing for each cut allows for a spiritual symbol of a Holy Trinity. Because most every religion has value in the number 3, it becomes a universally spiritual icon to all faiths.
I truly hope you enjoy the final product.
